** ISABLE ELEMENTARY NAMED SCHOOL OF THE DAY**
Isable Elementary is one of eight JPS schools that partner with Jackson State University's Mississippi Learning Institute, which focuses on improving reading and literacy instruction. Other partners in this collaboration are the Barksdale Reading Institute and the Mississippi Department of Education.
Josie H. Blake is the principal of the school which enrolls 413 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Established in 1951, the school is named for Emmalee Isable. A native of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Isable taught in schools in Vicksburg and Jackson from 1918 until 1939. She was remembered for her excellent teaching skills and exceptional musical ability.
